Goex Powder - 1802 - 2021?

From its beginnings  in 1802, when the  E.I. Du Pont de Nemours broke ground on his original black powder plant along the Brandywine River in Delaware, to the of the Belin Plant in Pennsylvania, to its 1997 move to Camp Minden in Louisiana, Goex Powder has been the staple powder source for black powder shooters.

Sadly, Hodgdon is closing the Louisiana plant, but has left the door open for another company to purchase the facility. Flinters are particularly affected because only black powder is sensitive enough to respond to the rather indirect flintlock ignition system. Some of the black powder substitutes may be sensitive enough to ignite properly, but I haven't heard anything to confirm their existence.

 To quote the company's website:

"Effective immediately, Hodgdon Powder Company, Inc. has made the decision to cease manufacturing operations at the company’s Camp Minden, Louisiana site while evaluating strategic options for the black powder business.

The business will wind down operations while an evaluation process on the future of the black powder business takes place. Strategic options for the GOEX and Olde Eynsford brands of black powder, along with the manufacturing capabilities, will include a potential sale of the business. All affected employees will be retained through December 31, 2021 to assist in an orderly closing of the site and receive severance commensurate with their years of service to the company.

The Hodgdon Powder Co., Inc has been honored to have been a part of the GOEX Powder legacy and sustains a fond appreciation for sporting customers who have enjoyed shooting GOEX powders."

Thanks to fellow SVML member Scott Carley for informing me of the Hodgdon's shutdown of the Goex facility. We all hope that another company will buy the plant and continue to keep Goex in our horns and flasks. The official Hodgon's press release can be read here.
