The SVML Trek Committee has adopted some changes for the 2023 Trek. If you’re a veteran Trekker the changes may alter how you approach the event:
Three Person Teams: Trek
Teams will be composed of only three members. We have adopted this change in an
effort to encourage traditional teams of four to “morph” into two teams, each
with two experienced members and one neophyte. Our intent is to bring more shooters into the Trekker's World, and hopefully add participants in the years to come.
Award Points: Teams who take on a neophyte Trekker will receive 50 additions points for their Aggregate Score.
Adjustment Of The Challenges:
Challenges presented will be scaled back to be achievable for a smaller
team. The traditional challenges will still be there, and Team Captains will need to adapt their strategies accordingly.
Lending Library: A “Lending
Library” will be created. It will consist of all of the articles needed by a
single trekker, and may be used only for during the Trek, and must be returned when
the team has completed the course. If you are a neophyte, the shirt, hat, and
wide belt will be considered “fully dressed”. Shooting related items will NOT
be provided.
The list will include, but not be
limited to, the following:
·
Hunting shirt or frock. No guarantees on the
size, so assume that it will be too large.
·
Wide Belt
·
Period Acceptable Hat
·
Haversack
·
Cooking Pot
·
Knife and Hawk
·
Water Bottle
· Blanket Roll
Camping Skills: Trek Teams
will be required to “make camp”. Keep in mind that these are demonstrated
skills, so your knowledge of 18th century camping will be
tested. In addition, specific supplies may be available for your use. Ample
time will be allowed to properly do the job.
Shooting Skills: Tactical awareness and hunting strategies will be tested, so Daniel Boone Up and be prepared!
Cooking And Eating: If you are making camp for the night, it is logical that some food preparation will be necessary. Teams should bring their own potable water. The greater the effort on the Trekker’s part, the greater the number of points awarded.
Guest Writer: Our next post will include a series of articles written by Gerry Messmer. "Lucky" has given us permission to print his most recent articles on Trekking. The first article appeared in the February 2023 issue of Muzzle Blasts, the official magazine and newsletter of the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. We are most grateful for his sharing his Trekking experience with us!
