Learning From The Highlanders

Period Correct Survival: I found this video that describes trekking as done by a Scottish Highlander in the 17th century. I was surprised to see animals skins as part of one's sleeping gear, but it made sense, and would be period correct. Native Americans used buffalo robes (hides) as both ground cloth and blanket, but I never thought of carrying a torso-sized piece of hide to keep my torso warm and dry. While showing up at Rendezvous might not be your cup of tea, you can modify your kit to include anything you see here. This also highlights the use of a pack basket, something that has been documented as being historically correct on this side of the Atlantic. Also note the use of a tump line as a simple means to carry a blanket roll.

Scottish Highlanders fought in the Seven Years War on the side of the British, so it is possible that some of them chose to settle in the Colonies.

This second video might give you some ideas about a wilderness sleep-over with a minimum amount of equipment.
